June 1, 2001  Seven Hospitals

Seven hospitals have agreed to pay over $5.4 Million Dollars to settle claims asserted in a qui tam action filed by a former medical device salesman. The suit alleged that between 1987 and 1994 the hospitals unlawfully charged federal health care programs for medical procedures using experimental cardiac devices which had not been proven safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration.

As part of the settlement, Kevin Cosens, the medical device salesman who filed the qui tam suit will receive more than $1 Million Dollars for having filed the action.
